Infrared is commonly used on incidents because it provides fire officials a quick, fairly accurate overview of where the fire is burning the hottest. The infrared unit, built in to the belly of a plane, scans the ground as the plane flies over the area. Data is transmitted to a specialist, called an Infrared Interpreter, who interprets the data and transfers it to a map that is used by firefighters. The results of last night’s flight show several areas of isolated heat, but no large pockets of intense heat as was seen previously.
